A growing gallery of photographs taken over the years in various places.

Some of these images have shown up in current or past incarnations of this website, or on my blog. Others, going back as far as 1995, have been scanned from prints and rescued from decay.

The images are roughly categorized and chronological, with a visible break in 2004 when I went digital, camerawise.

Blocks by Bordewijk

translation - english - '05-'07

An English translation of the short Dutch novel 'Blokken' (1931) by Ferdinand Bordewijk, attempted in collaboration with translator Peter Shenk.

Bordewijk is best remembered for his novel 'Character'. 'Blokken', a weird little gem in his oeuvre, is a surrealistic dystopia in the tradition of Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' and Zamyatin's 'We'.

But 'Blokken' is most of all an exercise in style. Terse, angular language, filled with complex nightmarish imagery, this is some of the strangest Dutch we could find.
